Job description

Role overview

The Head of Core Systems Development leads the teams responsible for Allego’s most business‑critical platforms, ensuring predictable delivery, technical coherence, and long‑term system health.

You lead a multi‑disciplinary team (15+ people) consisting of Product Managers, Architects, and Software Engineers, and you work closely with Enterprise Architecture and key business stakeholders to ensure our platforms are stable, scalable, cost‑efficient, and future‑ready.

A central part of the role is people leadership: building a high‑performing engineering team through coaching, mentoring, talent development, and continuously improving modern engineering and delivery practices - including the responsible adoption of AI‑supported development.

What you’ll do

  • Lead the Core Systems Development team, ensuring predictable delivery and operational stability of business‑critical platforms.

  • Manage and develop a large, multi‑disciplinary team (developers, architects, product managers) with a strong focus on career development, feedback culture, and team health.

  • Drive technical coherence, quality, and cost efficiency across the core systems landscape in close collaboration with Enterprise Architecture and domain architects.

  • Strengthen agile execution using Scrum and SAFe / Agile Release Trains, enabling cross‑team planning, dependency management, and continuous improvement.

  • Raise engineering excellence across QA, automation, reliability, and secure-by-design practices, and promote the responsible use of AI in engineering workflows (e.g., productivity, quality, and learning).

  • Partner with business and IT stakeholders to provide delivery realism, technical insight, and risk transparency to shared prioritization and decision‑making.

  • Provide strategic leadership across our core product and platform domains, including areas such as CPMS integration & orchestration, OCPP broker & edge connectivity, billing & invoicing, roaming & interoperability, public/partner APIs, and tariffs/offers/policy engines, supported by enabling capabilities like platform/SRE, quality engineering, architecture/standards, and security engineering.

Job requirements

What we’re looking for

Experience & leadership

  • 10+ years in software engineering and/or platform development, ideally including business‑critical systems.

  • Proven success leading a large development team (around 15–25 people), including line management, coaching, and organizational design.

  • Strong background in delivery leadership with Scrum and experience operating in SAFe environments (ARTs, PI planning, cross‑team delivery).

  • Experience with budget responsibility and a pragmatic focus on cost efficiency and sustainable delivery.

Technical credibility

  • A solid engineering foundation (ideally you have been a developer earlier in your career) and the ability to challenge and support architects and engineers constructively - without needing to be hands‑on coding every day.

  • Strong understanding of modern engineering practices: CI/CD, automation, quality engineering, observability/reliability, and secure engineering.

  • Interest and experience in AI‑assisted development and modern dev-support tooling, applied responsibly in real teams.

Mindset & collaboration

  • A people‑centric leader with a visible, authentic leadership style: cooperative, approachable, and able to build trust across disciplines.

  • Clear communicator who can bridge technical and business perspectives, align stakeholders, and move decisions forward.

  • Pragmatic and structured: you can make trade‑offs explicit and lead teams through complexity with calm and clarity.

Nice to have

  • Experience in eMobility, charging, energy, or adjacent platform ecosystems (e.g., interoperability/roaming, billing, partner integrations).

  • Familiarity with charge point and backend domains such as OCPP, platform integrations, or high‑availability transactional systems.

  • Leadership training and/or relevant agile/leadership certifications.
